CAN HE DO IT?

THE WEBER MOVIE COUNTDOWN

ELVIS & NIXON (2016)

#50 of 2016 is the new release Elvis & Nixon, a wafer thin slice of fun that barely has enough going on to sustain a feature film. Elvis Presley (Michael Shannon) wants to become an undercover agent to help his country fight the drug war and travels to DC to talk to President Richard Nixon (Kevin Spacey) about it. The "drama" concerns whether Nixon will even consent to see the famous entertainer. But see him he does, and the scenes of Elvis and Nixon interacting are delight...ful. Shannon, while not looking a whit like Elvis, plays the quirky singer with self-awareness, sincerity and heart. Spacey is more of a mimic of Nixon, veering dangerously close to caricature, but effective. Another big part of the laughs here is watching people react to Elvis Presley dropping by their offices (like the Bureau of Narcotics and the Northwest Gate of the White House). There was no record of the real-life Elvis-Nixon meeting in 1970 but this is how is could have went. Amusing trifle that seems better suited as an HBO special but no regrets about seeing it.
