#46 DYING LAUGHING (2016)

#46 is the new documentary about stand-up-comics, Dying Laughing. While this seems like familiar terrain at first, the stories told by both well-known entertainers and lesser-known comedians still struggling to make their mark dwell more on failure and bombing on stage as well as the hard work it takes to even attempt to get on stage in front of 300 strangers and make them laugh. Shot in black and white with no performance footage at all, Dying Laughing has an astonishing array of participants - Chris Rock, Jerry Seinfeld, Jamie Foxx, Amy Schumer, Sarah Silverman, Kevin Hart, even Jerry Lewis. If you are at all interested in what makes these people tick, this is worth a look. Particularly striking is footage featuring the late Garry Shandling (the film is dedicated to him) warning would-be comics that they shouldn't even consider trying stand-up unless it's a calling. Otherwise, it's just too painful. And one story that Royale Watkins tells about bombing in front of Michael Jordan is particularly painful. Insightful
