THE WEBER MOVIE COUNTDOWN

THE DUNCWICH HORROR (1970)

#36 of the 2016 movie countdown is 1970's The Dunwich Horror, based on the work of HP Lovecraft. A monotone yet creepy Dean Stockwell from a weird family in Dunwich has designs on the Necronomicon (Book of the Dead) and eventually steals it. Meanwhile, young Nancy (Sandra Dee), who drives Dean home one evening, finds herself under his spell after he spikes her tea and she has strange sexual dreams. Yep, Sandra is going to be a virginal sacrifice to bring the Great Ones bac...k to this dimension and wipe out us puny humans. Imagine that - Gidget a virginal sacrifice! This is a slooooow moving movie - every scene is drawn out to the point of boredom. Les Baxter's music is ridiculously over the top and director Daniel Haller adds all kinds of psychedelic effects and solarization - for naught. Old pros Ed Begley Senior (his last film), Lloyd Bochner and Sam Jaffe contribute what they can, and Talia Shire pops up (as Talia Coppola) in a small part. Shout Factory is releasing this on blu-Ray as part of a double feature at the end of March with Murders in the Rue Morgue.

TLA one-word review: molasses!
