THE WEBER MOVIE COUNTDOWN

#19 The Drop (2014)

Tom Hardy is fast becoming one of the best actors around in my opinion. Here he plays the brooding, quiet Bob Saginowski, tending bar for Marv (James Gandolfini, in his last film). This Brooklyn bar is more than just a neighborhood taproom - it's a drop point for Chechen mobsters who now own the bar. On the way home one night Bob finds an injured, beaten pit bull puppy outside Nadia's (Nooni Rapace) house, whimpering inside a trash can. He reluctantly takes the pup and nurses it back to help, while meeting Nadia (who helps with the dog) and attempts to start a relationship. Meanwhile the bar is robbed, putting Marv in a bad place as the mobsters want their money asap. Oh and there is the off-kilter Eric (Matthias Schoenaerts), a bad guy who seems to be stalking Bob and says the dog - and Nadia - belong to him. Hardy is great here playing Bob as a bit of an injured puppy who may or may not be aware of all kinds of things going on. Like that poor pit bull, he very well could prove to be dangerous if mistreated. His slow burn and eventual reveal are fascinating. Gandolfini is also good in his swan song. This is a slowly building movie that rewards your patience. The screenplay is by Dennis Lehane, who wrote Mystic River and Gone Baby Gone (a personal favorite of mine). Recommended
