THE WEBER MOVIE COUNTDOWN

THE GOAL FOR 2018: 200 MOVIES WATCHED BY MIDNIGHT NEW YEAR'S EVE!  (AFTER TOPPING OUT AT 194 in 2017)

CAN HE DO IT?

THE WEBER MOVIE COUNTDOWN

#131 on the 2016 movie countdown is Deepwater Horizon, which is incredibly proficient in telling us how an oil rig operates, right down to the smallest technical term, but amazingly lacking in any kind of depth of
character. Based on a real-life disaster, Mark Wahlberg and Kurt Russell are tough honest Joes working on the oil rig Deepwater Horizon. The greedy BP corporate machine is led by John Malkovich (in a solid performance). Management cuts corners and the result is t...he biggest man-made disaster in history where 11 men died. When we get to the disaster portion of our movie, it's horrifically well done and sometimes you need to turn away. This is indeed hell on a well and director Peter Berg pulls off an amazing sequence of shots that will have you feeling the heat from your seat. But the actors only have an opportunity to play types and we get to know nobody except maybe Walberg's character a little bit (because we meet wife Kate Hudson and daughter before he goes off to work). Deepwater Horizon delivers effects galore but has the emotional depth of a Michael Bay film.
