THE WEBER MOVIE COUNTDOWN

DEAD RINGERS (1988)

#96 is one of the few David Cronenberg films I hadn't seen, 1988's Dead Ringers. Jeremy Irons brilliantly plays two parts, twin gynecologists Beverly and Elliot Mantle. They are extremely close - and Irons plays them so well that they are two distinct characters - we can tell the difference. These twins are not above swapping patients or swapping sexual partners. Elliot is the dominant one who, instead of breaking up with a woman, "gives" her to Beverly so that he can sleep with her. Who can tell the difference, right? A famous actress (Genevieve Bujold) comes to their practice to figure out why she can't have kids. She starts sleeping with Elliot who also gets hooked on the same drugs she takes. And passes her to Beverly. But the drugs seem to bring out some inner trauma and the brothers start to go off the deep end. Dear Ringers is awfully hard to watch sometimes, especially when one of the brothers has a bunch of medieval gyno tools made, and attempts them to use them on a patient! The Mantle brothers lapse into insanity as their practice collapses - they live in the filth of their former office and then - well, not telling but those medieval tools come into grisly play again. Well made and brilliantly acted as we observe their descent into madness - but not a film anyone could easily sit through twice.
