CREED (2015)

#119 is the latest in the Rocky film series, Creed, easily the best since the very first Rocky. Michael B. Jordan finds out as a child he is the son of the late Apollo Creed. Set up for a successful career in finance, he's got the boxing bug and heads off to Philly so his pop's old foe Rocky (Sylvester Stallone) can perhaps train him. Jordan is great as Adonis Creed, and Stallone gives a subtle, emotional performance as Rocky, a weary man who's lost everyone around him. The fight scenes by director Ryan Coogler (who also directed Jordan in the excellent Fruitvale Station) are innovative and some of the best I've seen since Raging Bull. Yes the story is a tad formula, but there's depth and substance and emotion and love in Creed. Plus a touching final scene that should be a fitting coda for Rocky Balboa. The first Rocky movie not written by Stallone is one of the very best. I didn't expect to be writing these words but - highly recommended
