THE WEBER MOVIE COUNTDOWN

#57 THE COUNSELOR (2013)

Movie 57 of the 2016 movie countdown is 2013's The Counselor. I don't know how this film slipped by me three years ago, but this is a unique and despairing story of what happens when one man, a lawyer (Michael Fassbinder), decides to get greedy and participates in a cocaine swipe from a Mexican cartel. It goes bad. And everyone involved is in big trouble. Big big trouble. And the counselor finds out that there is nothing he can say or do to make anything right or even. And the cartel takes its revenge in many ways to those involved. Fassbinder is excellent as the title counselor who is in way over his head and Brad Pitt is perfect as the amused middleman. Javier Bardem and Penelope Cruz are also quite good. And Cameron Diaz impresses as Bardem's girlfriend who oozes pure evil when she enters the situation. Directed by Ridley Scott and written by Cormac McCarthy, this film starts off at a deliberate pace and a little foggy - like the counselor who has no idea what he's gotten himself into until there are consequences. The Counselor will also show you many uncomfortable ways to take revenge, making for a pretty uncomfortable and violent second half. But overall worth your time.
