THE WEBER MOVIE COUNTDOWN

CONTAGION (2011)

I kind of stumbled into this film, which we stopped and watched – I have seen it before – because of all the problems dealing with the flu this year.  When Beth  (Gwyneth Paltrow) returns to Minneapolis from business in Hong Kong, what she thought was jet lag was far worse. Two days later, she’s dead and the doctors tell her stunned husband (Matt Damon) they don’t know what killed her.  Other cases are reported as the virus starts spreading. Doctors at the CDC and the WHO try to figure out a cure but this is a full-fledged pandemic.  As the real world waits for what we’re told will eventually happen, Contagion is an extremely unsettling film that seeks to portray the full outbreak of a deadly virus and what it will do to the world we know.  An all-star cast (Lawrence Fishburne, Kate Winslett, Marion Cotillard, Elliott Gould, Jude Law) vividly bring the situation to life, and Steven Soderburgh’s direction is spot on. This film is lower key than would would think, making the events portrayed even more chilling.  Catch it again if you come across it – or check it out for the first time.
