THE WEBER MOVIE COUNTDOWN

CHLOE (2009)

Chloe (2009) is an erotic thriller directed by Canadian filmmaker Atom Egoyan, who’s directed a few erotic thrillers in his time.  College professor David (Liam Neeson) seems less attracted to his wife, a gynecologist named Catherine (Julianne Moore) and shows the signs of having an affair.  But she can’t be sure.  Catherine decides to hire a call girl she’s recently become acquainted with, Chloe (Amanda Seyfried), and pays her to approach David as a student, to see if he will take the bait.  She sure does, and meets with Catherine to tell her in great detail about her experiences with David.  Those stories seem to turn Catherine on, but who is she being turned on by – David in “action” as told by Chloe – or Chloe?  Chloe is manipulating Catherine like mad – and one day the two ladies get all hot and heavy in a hotel room.  That’s when Catherine starts to wonder of all of these David and Chloe stories are true.  And we’re off to the races!  The film starts off well and has you truly wondering who is sleeping with who and why but it takes a really stupid turn in the last reel that takes Chloe off the rails.  Neeson has very little to do here – the film really belongs to Moore and Seyfried who are quite good before we head into Fatal Attraction land.  Tons of female nudity here – we did say erotic thriller, didn’t we – but you’ll shake your head at where Chloe ends up.  Seek out Egoyan’s much better film Exotica instead.  #94 of 2017.
