THE WEBER MOVIE COUNTDOWN

CAROLE (2015)

#26 on this year's countdown is Carol, which richly deserves its Oscar noms. Cate Blanchett, exuding all kinds of 50s movie star glamour (good because this film is set in 1952) is the title character who has a little girl, a crumbling marriage and an affinity towards the same sex. One day she spies Rooney Mara working at a department store and there's a mutual attraction. Next thing you know, they have lunch and Mara's invited out to the house - which really doesn't sit wel...l with husband Kyle Chandler (who's good), a drunk who wants to fix his marriage. This is a deep, somber love story set in a time where same sex relationships were only spoken about in whispers. 1952 is depicted perfectly if muted and the pace is deliberate - a good thing if you care for the characters and their plight, which we did.
