Would you believe 1959’s Caltiki the Immortal Monster is #66 on the 2017 Movie Countdown.? Yep, it’s a black-and-white Italian-American monster movie but it’s been fully restored by the folks at Arrow Video and the cinematography by future Italian director Mario Bava is actually gorgeous! The story deals with an expedition poking around the ruins of an ancient Mayan city to investigate the mysterious disappearance of its inhabitants. BUT they should have stayed away from th...e sacrificial pool because they woke up the monster underneath that’s been alive – but dormant – for over 20 million years – ladies and gentlemen, presenting the fearsome and malevolent god Caltiki! It’s hard to explain what Caltiki resembles – kind of a blob with fabric. But Caltiki can turn men touched by it evil – and if it gets enough power, it can split like amoebas. And then Mexico would be in REAL trouble! It’s up to archeologist Dr John Fielding (John Merivale) to team with the Mexican military to stop the spread of Caltiki! I mean, this is just a silly little B picture but this is a really nice 2-DVD set. Caltiki in HD and on a blu-ray? YEP! Unfortunately the English-language version has been damaged/lost and it’s recommended that you watch the Italian language dub. We did, it was fine – and Caltiki was just as blobby in Italian! If you are a fan of Bava (as I am), it’s definitely worth a look.

TLA one-word review: blobbish
