THE WEBER MOVIE COUNTDOWN

THE CALLING (2014)

Oh we're not done catching up...#135 is The Calling (2014), where Susan Sarandon is Hazel, a cop with baggage in a small Canadian town where nothing much happens. Until there's a grisly murder. Hazel, looking very much like Marge Gunderson in Fargo ( except with a lot less hope and optimism and a side of painkiller addiction), is played wearily by Sarandon, who does her best with a subpar script. She figures out that this guy is a serial killer going from town to town kill...ing Canucks as far east as Montreal. The premise is interesting but the story gets more and more outlandish and idiotic until you throw up your hands and say 'oh come ON!" Among the actors wasted in The Calling: Ellen Burstyn as Hazel's mother; Topher Grace as the young, inexperienced policemen who just transferred from Toronto; and Donald Sutherland as a old priest/Latin linguistics expert who is kind enough to explain the plot (and try and fill the enormous plot holes) several times. Oh jeez.

Should TLA see this? Only if she is a fan of those aviator hats. Gosh they sure do look warm, you betcha, eh?
