THE WEBER MOVIE COUNTDOWN

BRIDGE OF SPIES (2015)

#118 of the year is the current Steven Spielberg film Bridge of Spies, a rock solid entertainment based on real events during the Cold War when Russian spy Rudolph Abel is exchanged for U-S U-2 spy plane pilot Francis Gary Powers. Tom Hanks (who, if you haven't noticed by now, is our generation's Jimmy Stewart) is attorney Jim Donovan, whose law firm is appointed to give captured spy Abel (an excellent Mark Rylance) the appearance of a fair trial. That he gets, and more. He is convicted but Donovan convinces the judge that it might be wise to sentence him to life in prison as opposed to the death penalty. I mean, one of our guys might be in the same situation in Russia someday. Right you are Jim. The scene shifts ably to East Germany as Jim is asked to negotiate as a private citizen with the USSR and the GDR to exchange Abel for Powers - as well as an American student in the wrong place at the wrong time. Hanks is superb as the everyman lawyer and the supporting cast is right on. Great storytelling with a surprisingly light touch by screenwriters Joel & Ethan Coen and Matt Charman. It was the movie I was hoping for. Recommended.
