#32 BLOOD BEACH (1980)

Oh, all right, one more. I remember going to see Blood Beach (1980) at the Colonial Theater in South Philly when it first came out! It's best claim to fame was riffing off the classic Jaws 2 tagline: "just when you thought it was safe to go back into the water." Blood Beach added five more words to that line: "you can't get to it!" Detective John Saxon is among those trying to figure out why people keep disappearing off the Santa Monica beach - and then what seems to be s...ucking them under. Burt Young is on hand as a slovenly cop named Royko, originally from Chicago (get the Royko reference?), who seems to just stand around and trade lines, Odd Couple-style, with dapper partner Otis Young. Aw jeez there are no real special effects here - just an amusing cast and a silly premise with a killer advertising campaign. Blood Beach is not something I can recommend with a straight place. It was a guilty pleasure even back in '80. It's a lost movie today and I'm not sure anyone's looking for it. There is a crappy copy on YouTube (it's amazing what's on YouTube!) if you are curious or you remember this thing. #32 of 2017
