BLACK PANTHER (2018)

What does it say about DC’s woeful efforts when Marvel can launch a film with one of their second or third-tier characters and make over a billion dollars (that’s billion with a capital B) while making an excellent film that transcends a mere super-hero epic?  DC meanwhile cannot put their iconic heroes together in one film and manage basic entertainment.  Black Panther is such a good film!  I’ve seen all three of Ryan Coogler’s films now – Fruitvale Station, Creed and now Black Panther – and he continues to hit it out of the park with each film she does.  Chadwick Boseman is T’Challa, returning home to the African nation of Wakanda to take over as king because of the death of his father.  But his father left a little baggage back in Oakland in 1992 – another heir to the throne, Killmonger, played by Michael B. Jordan, who’s been in all of Coogler’s films, and is always excellent. His challenge, which is a ritual battle, is successful and suddenly Killmonger is king and has great plans to take the wealthy, technology-fueled nation of Wakanda, which is shaded and hidden from the rest of the world – the world thinks it’s a struggling farming nation – and rule what will be a very surprised bunch of nations.  We have action, we have compelling characters and drama and you barely know it’s a Marvel movie, it’s that good.  It also runs 2 hours 15 minutes and it races by like a Quinjet!
