THE WEBER MOVIE COUNTDOWN

THE BIG KNIFE (1955)

I did not know this film existed until  I picked up yet ANOTHER Arrow Films re-release of this tale of Hollywood – but it’s not a very complimentary tale.  No sir!   Extremely sour on the motion-picture making business,  this is based on a Clifford Odets play and it is kind of stage-bound.  But the performances – Jack Palance is Charlie Castle, a successful actor with all the trapping of fame – a beautiful house, a seven-year contract, a beautiful wife – financial security.  But Charlie used to be an idealist and now he feels trapped doing films that really mean nothing .  And his wife wants out – and he wants out too! But the producer he works for, Stanley Hoff (played by Rod Steiger) has some damaging information on Charlie and won’t let him leave the business.  This is INTENSE as Palance gives one of the best performances of his career.  Ida Lupino is strong as his wife who sees through these Hollywood types.  Wendell Corey is really scary as Steiger’s fixer who can fix any situation.  Shelly Winters turns up as a starlet who knows too much – lots of great Hollywood character actors in this, all directed by the great Robert Aldrich.  This is a strong acting gem waiting to be rediscovered.
