CAN HE DO IT?

THE WEBER MOVIE COUNTDOWN

There are a slew of screenings this week - and #29 on the 2015 countdown is Beyond the Reach, a 2014 flick that is finally coming off the shelf in April. It's not bad - Michael Douglas, reminding everyone of Gordon Gekko, is a big shot zillionaire coming to New Mexico to hunt a rare bighorn ram. He hires tracker Jeremy Irvine to help him find it. Deep, very deep in the woods, he mistakes a hermit for the ram and kills him. Gekko, er, I mean Douglas, wants to bury the body... and pay off Irvine, but the kid changes his mind and won't do it. So he's forced to strip to his skivvies and walk thru the desert until his blood boils and he succumbs to the heat, Douglas following right behind with a rifle inside his gigantic Mercedes desert vehicle. Douglas has a field day with the character, playing the demented hunter with a ton of gusto. Irvine is a little vanilla, but the cat and mouse between the two is entertaining. There are moments where it gets a little Wile E. Coyote versus the Road Runner, right down to Douglas chucking lit sticks of dynamite at his prey(!) There is a stupid tacked on ending that is ridiculous and should be ignored. Despite that, it's worth a look. In selected theaters and on demand mid-April.
