THE WEBER MOVIE COUNTDOWN

THE THIRD ANNUAL BEST AND WORST MOVIES SEEN BY JW PLUS ALL 137 MOVIES SEEN - 2015!

John Weber·Tuesday, January 5, 201643 Reads
Well we didn't make 200. We didn't even make 150. 137 is the lowest total since we started keeping track in 2013. There were a LOT of extenuating circumstances in 2015 so I'm giving myself a pass and once again aiming for 200. Which means once again, gentle reader, that there will be a lot of film reviews fighting for status space with bitching & moaning, trains & llamas and the occasional cat video. You have been warned! Remember that this list will include films that I saw in the calendar year 2015, which means that some films from 2014 (and earlier) will creep in here. And although I wish I could have seen every great movie from 2015, there are only so many hours in a day. Of course, nearly everything is available on pay movie channels, Netflix, Amazon, Redbox, bootleg or even a theater near you. And we're off...
BEST FILMS SEEN IN 2015
SPOTLIGHT is the best movie I have seen this year (and the second best pic with Michael Keaton involved). This film pays homage to what is becoming a lost art - investigative journalism. Based on a true story, Michael Keaton, Liev Schriber, Rachel McAdams, John Slattery and especially Mark Ruffalo make up one of the best ensemble casts seen in years in a hard-hitting story that will have you enthralled. Others that were the best I've seen in 2015 in no particular order include THE HATEFUL EIGHT (not for all tastes - does anyone take the chances Quentin Tarantino does?), BRIDGE OF SPIES (Hanks and Spielberg at the top of their game), CREED, MAD MAX: FURY ROAD, GRANDMA (good movie - but there is one scene with Lily Tomlin and Sam Elliot as old lovers that is truly marvelous), WELCOME TO ME, EX MACHINA, LOVE AND MERCY (Elizabeth Banks and Paul Dano are flawless), THE BIG SHORT, Kevin Bacon's COP CAR, the insane, twisted KINGSMEN: THE SECRET SERVICE and a few from 2014 - WHIPLASH (J.K. Simmons deserved every accolade possible), GOOD GIRL (this film deserved a lot more love than I think it got), THE THEORY OF EVERYTHING, THE IMITATION GAME, BOYHOOD and AMERICAN SNIPER. A nod to a smart, clever horror movie spoof called THE FINAL GIRLS (2014) that I enjoyed tremendously. Oh, and a forgotten Australian gem called WAKE IN FRIGHT (1971) co-starring Gary Bond and Donald Pleasance. A savage, unmerciful, upsetting and powerful movie about a man's downward spiral.
One special mention - I cannot say that 2015's I SMILE BACK with Sarah Silverman as a wife and mother battling addiction problems is one of the very best of the year. But her portrayal is nasty, uncomfortable and holds nothing back. She is astonishing and this should be seen.
WORST FILMS SEEN IN 2015
The godawful Westworld ripoff VICE is the very worst(2015) as we continue to watch Bruce Willis' career descent. The best premise with the worst treatment? PIXELS (2015) as we continue to watch Adam Sandler's career descent. The gore horror "comedy" GRAVY (2015), from the people who brought you Psych on USA, should not be seen by men, women, children, pets, insects, amoeba or aliens. The worst film sequel derived from a good film? PITCH PERFECT 2 (2015)! Did they even see the first film (shame on you director Elizabeth Banks!)? SAN ANDREAS (2015) is one of the worst disaster films ever! RUN ALL NIGHT (2015) is one of the most dumbheaded action flicks of the year starring everyone's favorite geezer action hero Liam Neeson. Oh and better you should watch your paint dry or your grass grow before you resort to entertainment with the likes of the remake of VACATION (2015), THE GALLOWS (2015) and TRUE STORY (2015). Enjoyable movies for a Bad Movie Night? William Shatner in the incredible IMPULSE (1974), the Atlanta-shot, Italian sci-fi mess THE VISITOR (1979), the insane, goofy, sometimes jaw-dropping sci-fi looney tune JUPITER ASCENDING (2015) and a pair of Chuck Norris accidental howlers, SILENT RAGE (1982) and BREAKER BREAKER! (1977). Who knew Chuck was this kind of talented?
And that's one man's 2015. Poor TLA had to watch nearly all of these. That's why I buy her nice jewelry. 2016 reviews will start to show up soon. In the meantime's here's the complete 2015 list in order:
