BE KIND REWIND (2008)

This is an oddity.  It’s directed by Michael Gondry, who achieved fame for directing Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind with Jim Carrey.  A quirky movie that went somewhere .  This is extremely quirky – it’s really a fable.  Our cast of characters are located in Passaic, New Jersey.  Danny Glover is the owner of a video store.  A video store that still rents out VHS tapes.  Which is to say it’s not doing a boffo business.  Mos Def works for him – I THINK -  and Jack Black is a junkyard worker who thinks the electric company is out to get him.  During an attempt to sabotage the power company, he gets an electric shock.  One that stays with him as he walks through the video store – and his body erases all the tapes.  This is while Danny is away at a week-long Fats Waller symposium.  So what are these bumbling nincompoops going to do?  Easy – they begin to re-enact the films that have been erased and filming, starting with Ghostbusters.  These remakes make Ed Wood look like Michael Bay, spending-wise.  Eventually, the store is packed with people who want to see their homemade stories.  It probably helped that most of the folks renting the tapes are also in them!  Anyway, the neighborhood has been brought together – until the copyright police, in the form of Sigourney Weaver, show up and confiscate ALL of the illegal remakes.  So what does the neighborhood do?  They rally and make a big ol’ movie about Fats Waller.  This is an odd one – It plays at the level of a Saturday morning live action kids show but it’s not unpleasant to watch.  Just puzzling.
