BABY DRIVER (2017)

WHOA!  Baby Driver is absolutely amazing with one of the best car chase scenes opening this film I’ve ever seen.  I was riveted to my seat as our young driver, Baby (Alsel Egort) extricates his cargo of bank robbers from the almost sure clutches of the Atlanta Police Department with some pretty astonishing maneuvers!  You’re exhausted at the end of this scene and we haven’t even met our players.  Doc (Kevin Spacey) is the mastermind of all of these heists, never using the same foursome to pull off these robberies except for Baby, who he sees as his good luck charm.  Jon Bernthal, Jon Hamm and Jamie Foxx are among these wacked-out crooks who take turns working these jobs.  Baby has a backstory, losing his parents in a car accident when very young, and always having earbuds blasting away in his ears - it covers up the sounds of his tinnitus.  Anyway (and typically), he wants out when he repays his debt to Doc – but Doc wants him involved in another job.  Plus he’s met a waitress named Debra (Lily White who is just adorable) and would like to run away with her.  All kinds of crap goes down in the final job – ALL set to music – so much is choreographed to music (excellently so) that you won’t believe it!  You will never see “Hocus Pocus” by Focus used so well again!  Director-writer Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World) has outdone himself again.  This is a blast – a film that is best seen in a theater with the volume up and a lively audience enjoying the ride with you.  I have one regret – that I cannot see this film again for the first time.  That’s how good Baby Driver is.  One of the best of the year so far.  Highly recommended.
