CAN HE DO IT?

THE WEBER MOVIE COUNTDOWN

#155 is Arrival. Watch this one closely and carefully. Amy Adams is a linguistics expert called in by the U-S Army to try and translate the language of and to communicate with alien beings who are in a obelisk (similar to the one in 2001) hovering over Montana. There are 12 of them around the world. Various military leaders in the 12 different countries want to blow them out of the sky so the scientists had better figure out their purpose here and fast. The plot seems sim...ple - it's anything but. Adams is transcendent here as Louise, who seems to be recovering from a personal tragedy as she deals with all of this. Arrival is sober and somber, a thinking man's science fiction film. And perhaps not really about aliens and spacecraft at all. This is an excellent film that will make you think about it and discuss it all the way home. In our case, almost all the way through dinner. There was a moment when "it" hit me and I turned to TLA and said "oh my God!" There were a few instances of that in our theater. Delighted to see that a film like Arrival can be released by a major film distributor with a major ad campaign. Very much recommended, one of the best of the year.
