CAN HE DO IT?

THE WEBER MOVIE COUNTDOWN

A TALE OF TWO THIEVES (2014)

#84 and #85 of the year (4 and 5 of the Reel East Film Festival) are a pair of documentaries. First, the 2014 British documentary A Tale of Two Thieves, which is about a huge 1963 train robbery that netted the bad guys $85 million in today's money. Lighthearted, whimsical and fun, this also purports to identify the mastermind of the caper for the very first time. Next, A Fuller Life (2013) is an extraordinary profile of the late director Sam Fuller as imagined by his daughter Samantha. The approach here is that every word said is from Sam's autobiography, read by the likes of James Franco, Jennifer Beals, Constance Towers, Bill Duke, Mark Hamill, Buck Henry, film directors Wim Wenders, William Friedkin, Joe Dante and Monte Hellman (among others). Fortified by Fuller's footage shot in Europe during World War II, movie clips and home movies, this is compelling stuff, even if you're not familiar with the man or his work. I was utterly drawn into this film and was sorry when it ended.
