THE 33 (2015)

The 33 (2015) is a well-done adaptation of the real-life drama that saw 33 Chilean miners become trapped in a mine cave-in for 69 days in 2010. It's tough to build suspense when you know what happens to the characters but director Patricia Riggen does a really nice job here. Antonio Banderas, Lou Diamond Phillips and Oscar Nunez are among the trapped miners and Gabriel Byrne is one of the engineers above ground heading up the rescue effort whose character gets to deliver t...he exposition as to why it is so difficult to get these guys out (among other things, drills used to tunnel down to their refuge will tend to drift, by as much as ten feet, completely missing the mark. I did not know that!). Rodrigo Santoro is especially good as a Chilean official who takes charge of the whole operation when the mining company is ready to wash their hands of it and mark the site as a mass grave. There is one standout scene when the miners, starving and splitting one final can of tuna 33 ways, start to hallucinate and everyone imagines their favorite foods suddenly brought by their loved ones. It is a funny, touching and unexpected moment that helps The 33 rise a bit above formula. Worth a look. #134 of the 2016 Movie Countdown
