THE WEBER MOVIE COUNTDOWN

3 BILLBOARDS OUTSIDE EBBING, MISSOURI (2017)

No question for me this is the Best Picture of the Year for 2017.  Mildred Hayes (Francis McDormand) wants to know who raped and killed her daughter, still an unsolved case, a year or so ago.   She pressures Ebbing’s finest, led by Chief Willoughby (Woody Harrelson) by buying three billboards that ask why there are still no arrests and one mentions the chief by name. The chief’s not a bad guy – he, too, wants to solve the case.  But she is determined and those billboards aren’t coming down, despite Officer Dixon’s (Sam Rockwell) simple minded attempts to get rid of the billboards.  The description doesn’t do justice to how good this film is.  3 Billboards is a dark comedy-drama that will have you ranging from one emotion to another – sometimes within seconds.  Every character is richly drawn, all have more to them then you see on the surface, and I don’t see how Rockwell doesn’t win Best Supporting  Actor for his work.  Best I’ve ever seen him – and he usually is excellent.  Rare is the movie where I sit and watch and say “I don’t know what’s going to happen” – last time was Being John Malkovice,  well, 3 Billboards outside Ebbing, Missouri joins that company. Outstanding film written and directed by noted playwright Martin McDonagh.
