CAN HE DO IT?

#11 20th CENTURY WOMEN (2017)

#11 is 20th Century Women, which is one of the best acted films of the year. Annette Bening is marvelous as Dorothea, who had her only child at the age of 40 (the husband is long gone) and, at the age of 55 in 1979 (when the film is set) wants to raise that son, 14-year-old Jesse (Lucas Jade Zumann), the best she can through the confusing teenage years. But she also realizes that she needs help. So she calls on her tenant Abbie (Greta Gerwig) and Jesse's platonic friend Julie (Elle Fanning) to have them help her raise him. This film is a lot less simplistic then the plot description - it's a slice of life, albeit an important slice of these people's lives. While a tad long and a bit repetitive, the performances by all, including Billy Crudup as a live-in handyman, are solid. You will care about these characters and think profound thoughts about life as you leave 20th Century Women.

TLA one-word review: unremarkable
